Back in 1996 the drug fueled drama Trainspotting was a massive hit. Based on Irvine Welsh‘s novel with the same name, it was a groundbreaking tale about the drug scene and the influence of friends set in Edinburgh. Directed by Danny Boyle, it shot several people to fame including Ewan McGregor (who played Renton), Jonny Lee Miller (who as a teen girl I fancied like mad) and bringer to life of my fave Trainspotting character Spud, Ewan Bremmer.
Earlier this month at a screening of his latest film Steve Jobs Boyle told Deadline that he was eager to make a sequel to the 96 smash and in fact it would be his next project. It was exciting news indeed but very few details were known… until now.
Boyle has confirmed that all four main actors from the original are interested in reprising their roles and that John Hodge, original screen play writer of the first film, has been busy working away on the new script – and it’s terrific!
When the initial news broke I was worried that the new film would go off on a tangent somewhere by trying to be too different but I needn’t have worried. Boyle and Hodge are sticking to Welsh’s sequel novel ‘Porno’ to bring back Renton and the gang which is set ten years after Trainspotting. Boyle has indicated that filming will start May/June 2016 so a release looks set for next year… exciting!
